The UFS Kovsies produced a polished performance to demolish the UCT Ikeys 38-0 and claim the Varsity Sports Sevens Plate in Plettenberg Bay on Saturday.
Having already beaten UCT earlier in the day the team from Bloemfontein started with something of a psychological advantage and they certainly made it count to claim the first piece of silverware on offer in Plettenberg Bay.
The match started in wet conditions which made handling a challenge for both teams, but it was Kovsies who asserted themselves on the game early on, spending plenty of time in Ikeys territory.
The pressure finally told when Tertius Kruger was able to brush off a few defenders and power over for the opening try, and that was followed up soon afterwards when Renier Botha pounced on a loose ball to scamper over unopposed.
A try just before the break saw Kovsies take a commanding 21-0 lead into half-time and the Men from Cape Town were in search of some second-half inspiration, but it was not to be as Kovsies pressed home their advantage to record a resounding victory in the end.
The TUT Vikings managed to finish their tournament off with a flourish as they ran in six tries to hand Limpopo a 40-5 defeat in their Bronze play-off.
The team from up north have had a tough time of it in Plettenberg Bay this weekend, but there was some late consolation as they ran in their first try of the tournament just before half-time.
That try gave them some much-needed confidence and they took the game to TUT in the second half but could not add to their solitary try and will have to come back stronger in Margate next week.
