Kovsies made their trip to Stellenbosch a successful one, beating the Madibaz by 50-34 on Monday. With it, Kovsies didn’t only bag the maximum ten log points, but also boosted their semi-final chances.
Kovsies controlled matters throughout and ended the first and second quarter with a 12-8 and 22-15 lead respectively. The winning team called the power play in the 37th minute, leading 28-20 at that stage. They scored six goals without reply to stretch their lead to 34-20 which was pretty much game over for the Madibaz.
The ball speed of which Kovsies played was simply too good for the Madibaz, in particular when Kovsies turned over position they were way too quick for their opponents to set up a defence.
Burta de Kock, Kovsies coach, brought on Lefébre Rademan on goal attack after half time in the place of Rieze Straeuli, who is more known as a goal shooter. Rademan made a notable difference with her pace and willingness to shoot from far, whereas Straeuli was mostly trying to get as close to the goal net as possible.
Rademan ended with a 82% goal average, just shy of Gertriana Retief’s 83% who earned the FNB Player of the Match award. Alicia Puren, goal keeper for the Free State students, also became quite prominent in the second half of the match, especially doing well from rebounds. Tanya Mostert, who moved from centre to wing defence after the first 15 minutes, was also a handful with a number of intercepts.
