Kovsies and Pukke laid down a marker for the rest of the teams in the Varsity Hockey series, after making mince meat of their respective opponents on the second day of action in Potchefstroom.
The Bloemfontein team was merciless in their annihilation of UCT, beating them by 6-1 thanks to a brace by Lisa Hawker and contributions by national striker Izelle Lategan and SA under-21 player Tanya Brits.
UCT managed to get on the scoreboard through Stacey Morley-Jepson, but they were no match for the well-drilled Kovsies side.
At the same time Pukke was teaching NMMU a hockey-lesson in front of their noisy home crowd.
The team from Port Elizabeth did take the early lead through Keisha Arnold, but were soon brought back down to earth when Sulette Damons – once again the assassin-in-chief – scored two goals in quick succession. The Pukke ended up taking the match 5-1, after Carli Gericke and Celia Evans also made their mark.
Damons also scored a brace in her team’s 2-0 victory over Maties on Saturday. The Stellenbosch team were left frowning again on Sunday, after they had to settle for a 1-1 draw against Tuks. Quanita Bobbs opened Maties’ account early in the match, but Tuks hit back later through Kara Stella.
Maties is now under real pressure, and it doesn’t get easier from here. They take on Kovsies on Monday and will have to produce their very best to subdue the Bloemfontein side.
The Johannesburg derby between UJ and Wits ended in a 2-1 victory for UJ. Wits can hold their heads high though – when these teams met in a preparation match earlier in the week, UJ trashed them 5-0.
Witsie Demi du Toit scored her second goal of the competition, after she also contributed against UCT on Saturday. UJ’s goals were scored by Proteas player Bernadette Coston and Nika Nel.
