The UFS-Kovsies Athletics team are hoping to challenge the major universities for medals when Varsity Athletics gets underway.
The Administrative officer for UFS-Kovies athletics Sarina Cronje told varsitysportssa.com: “The event is very positive for South African athletics because at the moment the sport does not have a great image and this can only help.”
“We do not have our own track on campus which means that we have to travel to meetings and so we cannot host a Varsity Athletics meeting,” Cronje mentioned.
The athletes at Kovsies are a little less known then at the other major universities but Cronje is positive that they can perform well and win events.
“Gideon Trotter is a major contendor in the 100 metres as well as in the 200 metres for us.
“In the women, Ansulet Potgieter is going to be challenging for a top position in the 100 metre hurdles,” Cronje added.
She was placed second at the SA Senior games and this year is sitting in the top three this year so far.
These two, coupled with a number of other top athletes will be out to contest hard for the top positions in two weeks time.
