UJ athlete Kelly Kingwill heads into the final round of Varsity Athletics hoping to qualify for the World Student Games.
The multi-talented athlete competed in the long jump at the Stellenbosch leg and then took part in the triple jump on her home track at UJ in the last leg of the competition.
She came second in the long jump and managed to win the triple jump with a winning leap of 12.06 metres.
“Because you are only allowed on athlete per event, it becomes very tactical which events you do because you want to get maximum points for your university,” Kingwill told varsitysportssa.com.
“I was happy to win the triple jump because it is my favourite event and I was happy with how well I did in the long jump.
“This season I have had a few setbacks and I am currently battling with viral bronchitis so I haven’t been able to go to Durban for the USSA Championships,” Kingwill added.
These setbacks have hampered Kingwill’s ambitions slightly as she attempted to qualify for the World Student Games in Russia later this year.
“My PB [Personal Best] is seven centimetres off qualifying for the games.
“If I can compete next week I will have a shot at qualifying there but otherwise I will try at the SA Open later this month,” she mentioned.
Next week Kingwill hopes that she will be able to add to her win at UJ with another win in the triple jump at Tuks.
