Vaal University of Technology need a final day like no other to qualify for the semi-final of the 2022 Varsity Football tournament but one of their bright lights Simon Moeketsi feels anything is possible.
VUT face 2020 champions North-West University on Thursday, needing a win and hoping the men from the University of Pretoria don’t get a result against Wits University – to sneak into the top-four on the final day.
Last season, they were in a similar predicament but the occasion saw them smashed 5-3 by eventual champions the University of Johannesburg – and they left with nothing to show for their endeavours.
It’s been a similar scenario this season with industrious displays and lacking results but they never had the 20-year-old Moeketsi back then…
The first-year electrical engineering student joined the team along with head coach Mvula Tshabalala he revealed to Varsity Sports.
“I came to VUT with the current coach, I was with him in the development in our previous team, I’ve been playing around 15 years now already,” ‘Khune’ said before revealing his confidence in progressing to the last four.
“I think VUT can qualify for the semi-finals, this is football. If it’s 11v11, anything is possible. I believe VUT have a strong squad and we can do it if we play you to our potential. We all need to be there, we all want to be there so it comes from us as VUT players.”
Moeketsi has revelled in the experience so far playing for the VUT institution and admits the praise he’s been receiving and exposure has built his confidence to believe he could make a career out of football – and he’s hopeful to consistently feature with his teammates within the platform the tournament offers to professional hopefuls.
“The exposure and love that I’ve received since playing in the tournament, it’s great, I enjoy playing in Varsity Football – I so wish my team can be here every year,” he admitted.
“I love and respect every teammate I play with here. Hopefully, things will go our way as we planned. This is my first season playing in the tournament and from what I’ve been told, I’ve been excellent.
“So I’m grateful and from this experience that I got – I think there are [other] teams already interested, but only time will tell [if I move on]…”
VUT face off against the NWU Eagles, who themselves need a win to secure their top four spot, on Thursday evening at the Mafikeng Stadium. The game kicks off at 19:30 and will be broadcast live on SuperSport 4.
