Ikeys stalwart Byron Donaldson says his team is looking forward to playing at home after a rough two weeks on the road.
UCT suffered consecutive 6-0 losses away to the unbeaten duo of NWU and UJ, and find themselves at the bottom of the standings ahead of their clash with Kovsies on the Green Mile.
Donaldson is a relatively experienced player, when considering the generally youthful nature of the Warriors’ team.
The science student has high aspirations when it comes to his post-graduate studies, and he does a great job of keeping on the ball when it comes to his varsity and football roles.
Varsity Sport take a deeper look at the spirited player.
How long have you been playing for UCT?
I’ve been playing for the Warriors for two years now.
What are you studying, and what year of study are you in?
I’m in my second year, and I’m doing a BSc in Ecology and Marine Biology.
What do you hope to do with your degree with you finish up?
At the moment I would like to switch into a post grad in sport and exercise science, so working on performance analysis etc. with professional sports teams.
How do you manage to balance such a difficult degree with playing football for the Warriors?
One has to be very organised – just make sure you don’t fall behind. It’s difficult to work after training or matches, so I try to maximise whatever time I have on campus for work.
The Warriors have been through a rough couple of weeks – what would you say keeps them moving forward and believing in themselves?
We have a great spirit in the squad. We are a family, so we make sure to pick each other up and keep believing. Obviously we have had a difficult couple of weeks, but there is a determination to prove that we can compete and show the best of ourselves.
What do you think will be the effect of playing at home next week?
We know the conditions here, and the crowd are behind us so we can be relaxed and play our game. The crowd will help us push on for that first victory.
Which game have you most enjoyed playing?
The home game against Tuks.
