The UCT hockey team are hoping to show that they can mix it with the best in the country when Varsity Hockey gets underway in Potchefstroom this weekend.
The Cape side won the USSA B section last year, and will host the tournament in July, so they are aiming to show that they belong in the top flight by giving a good account of themselves in Varsity Hockey.
UCT coach Michael Joseph has been pleased with his team’s league form so far this season, and he is hoping that they can carry that momentum into the tournament in Potchefstroom this weekend.
“We have won all three of our games so far this season, including a good win over Victorians (Maties B) last week, so hopefully we can take some confidence into the tournament,” he said.
Joseph is keen to see how his players react to the stiff competition that Varsity Hockey will present, although he is not putting too much pressure on them at this stage.
“We will be playing against the top of the top, so we will just take it one game at a time and focus on the process without thinking too far ahead.
“Obviously it will be great to finish up there with the top teams, but we know it will be tough so it will be a good chance for us to see where we stand,” he explained.
The UCT coach has been rotating his players carefully to give them the best chance of performing to their potential in Potchefstroom.
“We have to rotate the players to avoid burning them out and it has come together nicely so we are looking quite good for what will be a big three or four months,” he added.
