With two rounds, semi-finals and a final left to determine the 2016 Varsity Netball champions, the University of Johannesburg netball squad have highlighted two of their breakout stars this season, with Kim-roché Holmes and Angelique Molefe making an impression on the Auckland Park based side.
Holmes and Molefe have contributed largely to UJ’s attacking and defensive sequences, with Holmes assisting captain Deancke Rohde by the poles and Molefe creating central passes as they both made crucial moves in keeping UJ in the game. The players have begun to build names for themselves and collect a few nods of approval in the netball fraternity as they took part in domestic, provincial and national squad representation, leading to their current positions at UJ.
Molefe said she is humbled and honoured to be recognised for her efforts this season, stating she is proud to have made an impact this year.
“It motivates me a lot to carry on and keep on going because I am coming to realise that playing for UJ is bigger than me. Everything that we are doing doesn’t just impact me but it’s for the benefit of everyone else around me.”
The petite centre said she would like to see her team move higher up in rankings for this spell.
“At the moment, we are peaking. So what I would like to see is us going up against the odds and reaching a position people never thought we would.”
Holmes further shares her thoughts on this season as she comments on her improvements. The 22-year-old said, “Like Angie (Molefe) said, we need to be very humble about our improvements and achievements, because we can make a difference on or off the court.”
The goal attacker said the team is trying harder to be better and do better this year.
“As we are trying, we have Kovsies and UCT left so we really want to bring everything that we have and we want to make it into the top four because we know we can do it, we just need to play as team.”
UJ face Kovsies tonight at the Rembrand Hall at 17h30. The match will be live on SuperSport.
