The Varsity Netball talent, Romé Dreyer’s, hard work finally paid off as she was awarded the title of the North-West Sportswoman of 2017.
Dreyer represents the NWU side as centre and wing attack in this year’s tournament.
“It’s a great privilege to be the North-West Sportswoman of the year. I realise now how blessed I am but this would not have been possible without the support of my teammates. In the end, it is a team sport and a team effort,” said Dreyer
She said that the team should just believe in themselves as they will face the Kovies’ side in their semi-final on Monday.
“I think that every player knows exactly what their responsibility is on court and we shall definitely focus and work on this. It is our goal to reach our peak and to play the best possible netball we as team can play. As a team, we see ourselves as our biggest enemy and it may be the reason why we complement each other on court. Our main focus will be to believe in ourselves.”
Dreyer points out that the side has shown growth and a close bond has formed between the players.
“I think with the practices, matches and as the tournament progresses we as team have grown tremendously. Although we have not yet reached our peak it still remains our goal. Our challenge for the semi-final ahead will be to play clinical netball,” said Dreyer.
“The spirit amongst the girls is incredible. It is more of a friendship type of vibe and that makes sport more fun and effortless.”
Dreyer is currently one of three players, alongside Khomotso Mamburu from Kovsies and Tuks’ Tshina Mdau, who are in the run for the Varsity Netball’s Player of the Tournament.
“The nomination was unexpected, and it is a great privilege. Mamburu and Mdau are two brilliant netball players, so it not going to be an easy vote.”
“It was a very long season with numerous challenges and successes as well. I would not have shared this journey with any other team. I’m proud to be part of the NWU-Pukke,” Dreyer concluded.
