Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) head coach Bushy Moloi said they are not thinking about past disappointments ahead of this year’s Varsity Football competition.
TUT were knocked out by NMMU in semifinal stage of the inaugural competition in 2013 after going through the entire tournament unbeaten. They were then barred from playing in the 2014 edition after fielding an ineligible player in the 2014 USSA national football club championship.
“It’s a pleasure to be back. We just putting everything behind us and we are just looking to this year’s explosive tournament,” Moloi told varsitysportssa.com.
“Unlike 2013 we are not 100 percent there yet, but maybe by the time we start playing we will be better.”
Moloi will have a fairly new squad of players to call from, but will still have the likes of Eliot Seema (captain), Oneth Mthangwana, Khomotso Ledwaba and Masonwabe Sokanyile from the 2013 team to call on.
“We have a totally new team. This year we don’t have what we would have wanted. The players that we have are going to see us through and we hope for the best,” said Moloi.
Moloi singled out Pretoria rivals UP-Tuks, who they play at home in the opening game, as one of the teams to beat, but also acknowledged some of the lesser known sides.
“VUT is one of those teams that are very dangerous. WSU can also play. UWC will also be hard with their experience – as well as NMMU.
“Those four teams will cause some major shocks in the tournament,” Moloi added.
Despite having a fairly new team, one thing that will not change is TUT’s positive style of play on the field.
“We don’t change our style. Our style of play is more attacking football and we can also defend when it matters the most.
“The good old days will be back,” said Moloi.
