South Africa’s exciting new TV series, Varsity Sing, starts with a bang tonight at 20:30 on kykNET (channel 144). As three Western Cape universities kick off the competition by each singing one song in the first episode, the very first item will have music lovers across the country salivating for more.
In a battle of voices between Stellenbosch University, the University of the Western Cape and the University of Cape Town, Maties begin the season by singing their own rendition of Karen Zoid and Francois van Coke’s popular song, Toe Vind Ek Jou.
In each round all three universities will sing three songs: one item of their own choice, one original South African composition and an original composition of their own.
Tonight’s episode sees Maties do things their way, as they not only opt to sing an item of their choice, but they put a unique twist to the Afrikaans song in an acapella masterpiece.
Watch as Loyiso Bala, the first Varsity Sing judge to comment, is blown away by the way Maties open up the show.
“Wow! I am absolutely entertained,” said Bala, after the audience took their seats following a lengthy standing ovation.”And if this is how this competition is going to be then we are definitely in for a great time.”
