With the Varsity Football tournament starting on 21 July 2022, North-West University (NWU) head coach Karabo Masehela says the Eagles are ready to soar in this year’s edition.
Back in 2019, the NWU Eagles made history by lifting the title for the first time and while they were their enterprising self in 2021 they never quite reached the heights expected of them as defending champions.
“The boys are ready and feeling excited about the upcoming Varsity football. My boys are physically and mentally ready to compete in this year’s tournament,” Masehela said.
He believes that every player on his team is ready to showcase his talent and that with the 12th man returning, a different Purple Army awaits this season.
“They have worked hard; it is just a matter of implementing and executing for results,” he continued.
“With supporters now allowed in stadiums after the 2021 tournament played under Bio-bubble, we can also count on our ever-supportive purple army fans, who have always rallied behind the team.”
His team is built around players like Tshepiso Mahlangu, Adam Fynn, Lesiba Mahlong and team captain Kanalelo Motsoeneng, the coach admits to citing their vast experience in the competition.
“The four players have played in the previous two editions of Varsity Football, so they bring the necessary experience to the whole Eagles team.”
The skipper, Motsoeneng says the spirit in the team is very high despite the bulk of the squad losing at the final hurdle of entering the professional ranks of South African football earlier this month.
“After losing at the semi-finals of the ABC Motsepe playoffs, the boys are now prepared to win this for their loyal fans,” he said.
