Varsity Football content contributor Charles Baloyi selects the standout players from Wednesday’s matches at the University of Pretoria.
WELCOME MASEMOLA (WITS)
Masemola is a natural centre forward who keeps the defenders on their toes. He made life difficult for the UKZN defence in their 4-1 drubbing.
Masemola scored a goal, his third of the tournament, and made an assist as Wits returned to winning ways.
He showed that he is a goal poacher and draws the defenders to him which allows for his teammates to have more time on the ball.
SIYABONGA GUMEDE (TUKS)
Tuks have Gumede to thank for their hard-fought 1-1 draw with UJ.
The goalkeeper stood his ground between the sticks and maintained his concentration throughout the 90 minutes.
The FNB Man of the Match proved that Tuks could rely on him to make vital saves.
His ball distribution was also on point and he made the back four feel safe as the last line of defence.
OBAKENG SEEKOEI (KOVSIES)
Seekoei didn’t find the back of the net or make an assist in the 1-1 draw against TUT, but he did cover a lot of ground and appeared to be everywhere on the pitch.
He hardly put a foot wrong in a flawless display that saw him break down TUT’s play in midfield and cut off their supply to the front line.
The midfielder was a worthy winner of the FNB Player of the Match award.
CHARLES SIKHOSANA (VUT)
Sikhosana ran tirelessly to help VUT earn a deserved point in their goalless draw against champions NWU.
He tracked back to defend and frustrated the NWU strikers, timing his tackles to perfection and keeping his composure throughout the 90 minutes.
Back-to-back FNB Player of the Match awards was just reward for his efforts.
