Varsity Football content contributor Charles Baloyi selects the standout players from Wednesday’s matches at the University of Pretoria.
TEBOGO LEKABA (TUT)
Lekaba led by example in a must-win game for TUT.
The Red Machine captain scored a stunning free-kick from a long way out to beat Wits goalkeeper Minenhle Mbatha.
When Wits equalised in the second half, Lekaba urged his team forward and ensured they did not give up. The winning goal came with three minutes remaining to keep TUT’s semi-final hopes alive.
Lekaba’s leadership qualities were there for all to see.
POGISO MABOTE (UJ)
The baby-faced assassin came off the bench to change the game for UJ, who beat whipping boys UZKN 2-0.
Early in the second half, he was quick to react to a loose ball, after Impi goalkeeper Khayelihle Luhlongwane had made a save, and rolled it into an empty net.
Mobote deservedly won the FNB Player of the Match award.
NTOBEKO MHLONGO (KOVSIES)

Kovsies have their goalkeeper to thank for taking a point from their goalless draw against the defending champions that could prove decisive in the semi-final race.
NWU had two great goal-scoring chances but Mhlongo stood his ground to keep the ball out and maintained his concentration throughout a tight game.
CONOR KEYLOCK (TUKS)
It’s not over until the fat lady sings. Keylock proved that with a dramatic, late long-range winner for Tuks against VUT.
The game was heading for a goalless draw when a Tuks’ free-kick was blocked by VUT and the ball landed in front of Keylock.
In football, you make your own luck and he certainly did to score the winner and claim the FNB Player of the Match award.
