The University of Johannesburg is currently sitting at the top of the Varsity Netball log after thrashing VUT 79-25 in the first round of games.
“We had a very good first game,” said Deancke Rohde, captain of the UJ netball team.
Dr Charlotte Scholtz, UJ Netball club manager and first team coach said that the UJ team showed great discipline on Sunday in their game against VUT.
“It happens quite often that if you dominate a game as we did, the players can lose focus,” said Charlotte.
The UJ girls worked hard till the end and managed to stand strong against a very physical VUT.
“There are quite a number of aspects of the game we need to fine tune, as we are well aware that in a competition like Varsity Netball, every game is a tough one and no opponent should be underestimated.” she added. “I believe the girls are mentally much tougher than at USSA’s and is motivated to do well”.
Rhode, who was named FNB player of the match, said: “I feel very honoured, but I would have not been able to do it without my team.”
“We managed to play all the substitutes, and we will continue to focus on our signature play throughout the tournament,” she added.
The game was played at the UJ Soweto Campus, and the very enthusiastic spectators were kept entertained by the action packed game and the UJ cheerleaders at half-time.
The game was closed with a rosy gesture by Mr Soweto and UJ student, Alino Katombe, who gave out red roses to the females in the crowd.
“We are celebrating women. We don’t have to celebrate them only in August. Everyday should be women’s day,” he said.
