The women’s sprint events got Varsity Athletics off to an exciting start in Stellenbosch on Monday night with some quick times posted early on.
The women’s 100m hurdles started in dramatic fashion as UJ’s Tracy-Leigh Cullis was disqualified for a false start.
Once the athletes got away at the second attempt national champion Rikinette Steenkamp took control and sped away from the rest of the field, with Kovsies’ Ansulet Potgieter the only one to come close to challenging her and Pukke’s Mihandra Dorfling taking third place.
In the women’s 100m Tuks’ Elzette Buys edged out Melissa Hewitt from Pukke in a tightly contested race, with the rest of the field following in a bunch. Buys broke 12 seconds, with Hewitt just over the 12-second mark and Maties’ Nabeela Parker taking third place in 12.12 seconds.
In the women’s 400m Anneri Ebersohn, who is the sister of rugby star Robert Ebersohn, was too strong for the rest of the field, but she was pushed hard by Maties’ Justine Palframan who did well to secure second place ahead of Pukke’s Arista Nienaber.
