Versatile NWU-Pukke star Bianca Erwee will bring an intense month of competition to an end when she takes part in the high jump at the final Varsity Athletics meeting in Pretoria on Monday.
After kicking things off by taking the title at the national Heptathlon Championships in Germiston, Erwee followed that up by coming second in the high jump at the inaugural Varsity Athletics meeting in Stellenbosch and winning the long jump at the second meeting in Johannesburg.
Next on the agenda for this well-rounded competitor from Potchefstroom is the USSA championships in Durban this weekend which will be followed by the final Varsity Athletics meeting at UP-Tuks on Monday.
Although Heptathlon is her primary concern Erwee is one of the most valuable field athletes in the NWU-Pukke team given her ability to compete in a range of events, and she explained that her primary concern is getting as many points as she can for her team.
“I am the best high jumper in our team, but last week they needed me in the long jump and I was happy to beat (UP-Tuks’) Zanri van der Merwe as she is very strong,” she said.
Once Varsity Athletics is over Erwee will shift her attention to the Heptathlon World Challenge in June, but for now her focus remains firmly on doing her best for NWU-Pukke despite her heavy workload.
“I am feeling pretty confident as high jump is probably my strongest individual event, long jump is a bit more of a gamble. I just hope that I am not too stiff on Monday after USSA,” she said.
Erwee explained that despite some injury setbacks the NWU-Pukke side are keen to show what they are capable of in Pretoria after finishing in a disappointing third in Johannesburg last week.
“The team is feeling good although we have had some important injuries like Simon Magakwe, but we will have to see how it goes after USSA,” she said.
