UP-Tuks’ Anneri Ebersohn is counting on the explosive atmosphere of the upcoming Varsity Athletics series to bring the best out of her.
The 400 metre and 400 metre hurdle star described last year’s Varsity Athletics as the highlight of her season, so she cannot wait to get out there and do her university proud once more.
“I am really looking forward to the Varsity Athletics, it was the highlight of my season last year. The atmosphere is great with the fireworks and the crowd – normally it is just our parents watching us compete,” she told varsitysportssa.com.
After starting her training programme in October last year, Ebersohn has upped the tempo since the beginning of the year to ensure that she is sharp as possible when competition gets underway in Port Elizabeth next week.
“Last year it was just about getting fit, and I raised the intensity at the beginning of the year so now it is more about short distance speed work,” she explained.
Ebersohn, who is the sister of rugby stars Robert and Sias, said that the UP-Tuks team is keen to make a big impression once again this year.
“We had our first meeting the other day and we all really want to build on the team spirit we had last year,” she said.
The UP-Tuks speedster said that she is looking forward to competing at all four of the venues this year, especially the first meeting in Port Elizabeth.
“All four of the venues are great, I love running in PE because it feels like you are running in a hole lower than the ground,” she said.
In terms of her long-term goals for the season Ebersohn would like to have a good SA championships and push for a spot in the Commonwealth Games team, but is taking it one step at a time with Varsity Athletics her only focus at this stage.
