Kovsies vice-captain Lauren-Lee Christians is delighted they were able to retain their Varsity Netball title.
The Free State side beat UP-Tuks 49-42 in their back at the Tuks Rembrandt Hall on Monday night.
Christians said their goal at the start of the netball season was to make sure the cup remains in Bloemfontein and they are happy that they were able to reach this goal.
“It feels amazing that we won the game. It is unexplainable how I am feeling right now. We had a good start to the game and we were able to beat Tuks even though it was not easy.
“We had come here to compete, we were never going to lie dead and have them walk over us. We told ourselves that we will not allow them to beat us like they did in the first match. We had a goal from the beginning and we worked hard at getting our trophy to remain with us,” she said.
The 23-year-old put up a player of the match performance in a match that saw her team mate and captain, Karla Mostert walk away with the player of the tournament award.
“We were determined to make our mark. We have had a wonderful season. We worked hard throughout the year to get here,” she added.
Her coach Burta de Kock said they worked on a different combination for the final as some of her players were on national duty.
“We focused on another combination, it is important that the players unite and know that they are all special. We prepared with Tuks’ type of playing and we also prepared our own way. I want to thank the Lord for this achievement and the players for putting in hard work,” she said.
