The UWC team have their sights set on a top six finish when they travel down the road to Stellenbosch for the first Varsity Athletics meeting on Monday.
One of the factors counting in UWC’s favour at the inaugural Varsity Athletics meeting next week is the relatively short trip between their base in Bellville and the Coetzenberg Stadium, and they are hoping to make that advantage count.
the short travelling distance also means that they can expect plenty of support when they take to the track in Stellenbosch on Monday night.
UWC Athletics Manager Jerome Walters told varsitysportssa that the team are aiming for a top six finish, although it will not be easy given the quality of athletes that will be on show.
“It is not far to travel, so hopefully that will help. Looking at some of the athletes that will be there we know it is going to be tough, but we want to make it into the top six,” he said.
After finishing in the top eight at USSA over the last few years UWC are hoping to raise their performance levels on the big stage.
“We have done quite well at provincial level, and it is a long process at national level but we hope to make some good progress through Varsity Athletics,” he said.
Walters said that on top of their traditional strength of sprinting, UWC will challenge in the jumping events and could also pose a threat in the javelin.
“We have some great sprinters like Brent Stevens and Bernice Roman, who was ranked ninth in the 100m in South Africa last year, but we also have some other athletes coming through that should also make an impression,” he explained.
