The last round before the semi-finals of Varsity Sing takes place on kykNET on Thursday, 1 September 2016 at 20h30, and will feature choirs from universities in the Free State.
This is an episode with a difference. The University of the Free State (UFS), Central University of Technology (CUT) and Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) were all confirmed to perform before the season began. But unfortunately, MUT lost crucial rehearsal time due to strike action on their campus, and made the decision to withdraw from the competition this year.
Varsity Sing decided to approach a popular entertainment choir rather than another university, as time wouldn’t allow for another university to prepare adequately and would place the new university in an unfair position with UFS and CUT having months to prepare. Varsity Sing is proud to announce that the Mzansi Youth Choir will perform in the two Free State episodes of Varsity Sing on 1 and 8 September.
The Mzansi Youth Choir is just one of the surprise elements episode seven has in store for viewers. Varsity Sing also welcomes two new judges this week, rather than the usual one guest judge. Nicolas Nicolaides stands in for Christo Burger, and Jannie Moolman takes a seat in the guest judge chair. Burger is in Italy with the Jacaranda Children’s Choir, but will return for the semi-finals.
The episode promises to entertain the audience, with songs like Soos ‘n Wildsbok and Mahlalela & Akasalili as well as a Ghoema Medley, which is guaranteed to get the crowd on their feet.
