She has already lifted the USSA trophy as captain in 2019, so doing a double with the Varsity Netball trophy would seal a perfect year for Monique Reyneke.
Should NWU win the trophy, they will only become the second team after Kovsies in 2013 to win the Varsity Netball and USSA titles in the same year.
Reyneke, playing in her fifth Varsity Netball competition, had a good netball year in which she travelled with the Proteas in January to England for the Quad Series, without making her debut. The 23-year-old goal defence has represented South Africa A, then national Under-21 team and the Fast5 side.
The Sports Science Honours student revealed to varsitysportssa.com a little bit more about herself in this QnA:
Most memorable match in the tournament over the years?
Winning the 2016 Varsity Netball final against Tuks in Pretoria by a single goal (after losing by four goals earlier in the group stage). It was our second successive title.
What part of Varsity Netball do you enjoy the most?
It’s a perfect platform to promote netball as a sport and acknowledge new upcoming players.
What’s your hobby outside of netball?
On the bench, watching series.
What job do you think you’d be good at?
Playing netball professionally or being a sport scientist.
Do you have a hidden talent?
Very good with direction.
What’s the most impressive thing you know how to do?
Giving creative gifts to friends and family.
What are you addicted to?
Anything sweet.
Which current opposition player would you have on your team and why?
Jeanie Steyn, captain and keeper of the Madibaz. I familiarise myself with her style of play.
What’s your least favourite netball exercise?
Any speed and agility (dot drills) exercise. It’s the best form of exercise but it kills me.
With which celebrity/celebrities do you have a photo together?
Too many to list. The one standing out the most is the one with Sharni Layton, a former defender and captain of the Australian Diamonds.
What day in your life would you like to repeat?
When Lenize Potgieter (Protea goal shooter) and I won the World Doubles Championship title in tenniquoits in 2014 against Germany. [Tenniquoits, also called ring tennis, is a game played on a tennis-style court, with a circular rubber ring hurled over a net separating the two players, with each endeavouring to catch and return the hurled ring into the opponent’s court. – ed]
What song have you completely memorised?
Datsun bakkie by Bok van Blerk.
