The beautiful Camps Bay strip will be the setting for some explosive Sevens and Beach Volleyball action this weekend, with some major prizes up for grabs as well.
Following the inaugural events in Plettenberg Bay and Margate last year, Varsity Sports has combined with sponsors FNB, Cell C, Steers and Samsung to bring you University sport at its best in a perfect summer setting at the famous beach in Cape Town.
Tickets for the event will be just R10 per day, and with park and ride facilities available at a charge of R20 from the Clifton Bowls club there is no excuse for Capetonians not to get down there and enjoy the vibe.
Beach Volleyball action gets underway on the beach at 10.00 on Friday, 10.30 on Saturday and 9.30 Sunday, with the Sevens kicking off from 10.40 on Friday, 11.40 on Saturday and 14.30 on Sunday.
For those unable to get down there selected matches from the first two days will be broadcast live on Supersport, and every single match in both sports will be broadcast on Sunday.
Former Springbok captain and Varsity Sports sport director, Francois Pienaar said that Camps Bay is the ultimate setting for a festival of Sevens and Beach Volleyball which also marks the first anniversary of Varsity Sports.
“The City of Cape Town have been great, we have got a park and ride for people coming to watch, you will see the fanfare and the professionalism of the tournament on Friday.
“It is definitely not just another university event, it is on another level.
“We are building a stadium on the beach which will have two courts, one for warm-up and practice and then the stadium which will seat around 400 people,” he said at the official launch on Monday.
Pienaar also paid tribute to the role of the sponsors, who have committed to making the Camps Bay event this weekend a truly explosive celebration of university sport on top of providing some incredible prizes.
“We pay for everything – flights, accommodation, referees, stands, music, whatever you see out there we take care of, and we can only do that because of our fantastic sponsors.
“If you look at our sponsors, First National Bank is very innovative and they understand their market. Famous Brands are an incredible company with over 2200 shops across South Africa, they are using Steers for this and they have used other brands for other competitions. Cell C wants to grow into this market and they are very innovative, and Samsung, if you look at what they are doing in sports it is incredible.
“Our suppliers also, we fly our athletes with Mango, and you will see some really innovative stuff on-flight in Mango next year. They stay at Tsogo Suns which is our partner, and SA Breweries – you can’t have sportainment without a cold beer,” he quipped.
