Maties, UJ and NWU-Pukke were the only teams left unbeaten after two rounds of action at the Varsity Sevens at Villager FC in Cape Town on Saturday.
Defending champions Maties showed their class in a dominant display against Fort Hare, while UJ are yet to concede any points in the tournament after their 19-0 win against UWC.
NWU-Pukke’s victory over UCT saw them round off the trio of unbeaten sides, and there were first wins for Kovsies and UP-Tuks.
Kovsies bounced back from their defeat to Maties to beat NMMU comfortably, while UP-Tuks were forced to work hard for their win againt WSU.
UJ 19-0 UWC
The Johhanesburg outfit held strong to keep their second consecutive clean sheet and scored three tries of their own to take another clinical victory. UWC spent plenty of time in opposition territory but could not breach the stern UJ defence as the team in orange made it two comfortable wins from two games.
UP-Tuks 24-12 WSU
UP-Tuks scored the only two tries of the first half against a spirited Walter Sisulu outfit, but the Eastern Cape side were not about to give up and scored early in the second half to put themselves right back in it.
A long-range try saw WSU draw level with a minute to play, but UP-Tuks took a dramatic win with a superb individual effort from Jermaine Kleinsmith who collected his own chip kick to score under the poles in the dying seconds of the game.
NMMU 7-29 Kovsies
Kovsies wasted no time in getting on top of the Madibaz, with two early tries giving them an early advantage which they never gave up in a comfortable victory.
The Bloemfontein side took a 19-7 lead into half-time, and added two more unconverted tries after the break to seal the win and hand the Madibaz their second straight defeat.
Maties 37-7 UFH
Maties were ruthless in their demolitions of Fort Hare, taking control of the match early on to put the team from Alice on the back foot from the word go.
Fort Hare managed to score their first try of the tournament just before half-time, but they still trailed 22-5 at the break, and things did not get any easier in the second half as Maties ran away with it.
NWU-Pukke 29-7 UCT
NWU-Pukke struck early with a superb try from their own half, but UCT hit back straight after a patient build-up to level the scores at 7-7.
The Potchefstroom side called the powerplay and took full advantage, exposing some weak defence around a ruck to run away for a 10-point try before adding another just before half-time to give them a 24-7 lead at the break.
The second half was more closely contested affair, with NWU-Pukke scoring the only try to seal a 29-7 win.
