Varsity Cup powerhouses Maties and UP-Tuks showed their pedigree on the opening day of action at the Varsity Sports Sevens in Plettenberg Bay.
Both teams finished Friday unbeaten to cruise through into the Cup competition, along with NWU-Pukke, UJ and NMMU, but the biggest surprise of the day was the fact that UCT were knocked into the Plate competition by an impressive UWC outfit.
The two sides played out a thrilling Cape derby which was clinched 26-21 by UWC, who will be hoping to spring a few more upsets on Saturday.
Both UJ and NWU-Pukke showed that they will take some stopping on Saturday by producing some strong performances, whilst NMMU will also fancy their chances in the knock-out round after some encouraging displays on the opening day.
The match of the day was undoubtedly the clash between favourites Maties and a determined NWU-Pukke side, and it was a last-gasp try which sealed a dramatic 19-17 victory for the team from Stellenbosch.
One team that struggled to keep up with the competition was Limpopo, who suffered something of an eye-opener on a day in which they failed to score a single try, so they will be intent on bouncing back on Saturday.
They will be joined in the Plate competition by the TUT Vikings, UCT and the UFS Kovsies whose 28-14 defeat to NMMU sealed their fate.
