It is still early days, but one gets the feeling that TUT will emerge as this year’s newly crowned Varsity Football champions.
I am willing to put my head on the block and tip the Tshwane University to go all the way to the grand finale.
TUT have the making of being champions and the stage is set for them to fulfill their dreams of being the best university football in the country. The fact that they were absent in last year’s competition will serve as a morale booster.
Their coach Bushy Moloi made a shock revelation that he will hand in his resignation if his side fail to capture the title. I admire Moloi’s courage and his commitment to his team’s quest to win their first title.
Nothing is impossible in football and I don’t see anything wrong with Moloi’s bold statement. He has assembled a team capable of going all the way.
This TUT team plays as a collective unit and they are hungry for the title. Their goalless draw against neighbors UP-Tuks in the Tshwane derby was a step in the right direction.
There are a handful of players that are the survivors in their debut campaign in 2013 and that experience will help them to cause problems for their opponents.
UP-Tuks seem to have lost their mojo this season and this is TUT’s perfect opportunity to take full advantage of the situation and walk away with the trophy.
TUT have an abundance of talent at their disposal and one gets a feeling that this could well be their year to finally shine and make history.
They produced the likes of Botshelo Mfulwane, who got snapped by AmaTuks in the Premier Soccer League. Another gem of a player will without a doubt be unearthed from the TUT squad.
There are also dark horses such as NWU-Pukke, who have the element of surprise in them. Wits can also sting a surprise or two in their second year at the competition.
It’s an open tournament and it is there for the taking. But TUT seem to be on the right track.
They have managed to gather four points so far and they will grow in confidence. They are in pole position to get a home semifinal. Their never say die attitude will help them go far in the third edition of the tournament.
I know that TUT’s only victory so far in the competition came against debutants Walter Sisulu, but their 3-1 victory laid down a marker. Picking up points against the new teams is not an easy thing to do but TUT showed the way.
There are no easy games in this tournament, but TUT were professional in their approach and they managed to get the business side of things done in style.
So far they are my pick to win the rest of their remaining fixtures. They are the type of a team that can grind out result even if they are not playing well.
