Wits face a tough examination in their final Varsity Football match of the season against log-leaders TUT, but they do not intend to go down without a fight.
Wits shot down the log into second last place after last Monday’s loss to UFS.
It has been a tough opening tournament for the boys in yellow who have struggled throughout the campaign to register goals. Their 2-0 defeat to the Free State side was no exception.
The loss meant more for the Wits than just slotting a few in the net. It was Wits’ most realistic chance to grab an all important fifth place on the log.
This Monday, Wits face TUT, who reign undefeated at the top of the log.
Wits coach Karabo Mogudi says his squad is not going to lie down for anyone and they are going to fight all the way.
“With the attendance at Wits on Monday, who came in numbers, we need to play for our fans, for the university and for themselves. To show they deserve to be here,” says Mogudi.
Although its a long shot, a win for Wits could put them back in fifth place if UWC draw with UCT and UFS lose to NMMU.
On the other side of the equation; if Wits lose to TUT and UCT beat UWC then Wits will finish last on the log.
The coach is very aware of the situation.
“Our result also decides who goes where. We cannot do a diservice to the others in 2, 3 and 4. We are not going there for fun. We seriously want a win,” he said.
Regardless of a couple of niggles in the squad Mogudi has thrown the gautlet at TUT.
“Over the last five years TUT has given us problems. I think we have only beaten them once. But we are not going to lie down on Monday.”
Whichever way the scorelines fall, there is one certainty – Wits will throw a spanner in the works. TUT watch your backs.
