Olympic star LJ van Zyl believes that the timing of the first Varsity Athletics meeting in Stellenbosch could not possibly be better.
Van Zyl, who holds the South African record for the 400m hurdles and represented his country at both the 2008 and 2012 Olympic games, will represent UP-Tuks in the relay events in Stellenbosch.
The experienced athlete believes that the first Varsity Athletics meeting could not possibly come at a better time, as all of the athletes will be in top shape following the SA senior championships.
“The timing of Varsity Athletics is very good as all of the athletes will be in good condition after the SA champs,” he told varsitysportssa.
Van Zyl is particularly excited about the exposure that Varsity Athletics will give South African athletics.
“It is very positive because it will all be live on Supersport, so hopefully it puts athletics in the spotlight,” he said.
Van Zyl said that the UP-Tuks team are hoping to emualte the success of their rugby side who have taken the Varsity Cup title for the last two years.
“We have quite a strong team, but we will have to do well to beat Pukke who have some of the best athletes in the country,” he explained.
