Have UWC turned the corner or was it a matter of UL not being good enough? The boys from Bellville bagged their biggest win of the season by thrashing UL 7-1. It was their first win at home and it came at the right time, but will it be enough to help them secure a top-four finish? We sat down with Renaldo Leaner, who is currently a COSAFA champ with Amajita and a CUCSA champ with the USSA national team. The BEd student has recently been involved in a tussle with his ream Ajax Cape Town and that has shown in his matchday performances.
“Not playing regularly at my club has affected me and my confidence has been low. The tournament has been bad for us but It’s part of the game, we take it one game at a time and I’m happy for the results against UL, we can build from that result going forward.”
After last week’s win the rails must be up for the Bellville side but they still have that bad travellers tag. They have UKZN next, away from home and with Leaner being absent from his side’s 7-0 win, we wait to see if he will get his spot back. In his absence, Ryan Ramandh was on hand to ensure that they kept a clean sheet. It was also great to see the home side scoring a lot of goals and the main assassin was Phiwokuhle Mphalala, who bagged the first hat-trick of the season.

“I feel that most of the players are not used to playing with cameras around, it’s their first time but they will get used to it. That is something that’s bothering me, we play away and we lose but when we home we do better and I’m always on the receiving end of those losses. I’m happy that Jambo can always step up when I’m not there,” added Renaldo Leaner.
Next up is UKZN at Howard College Campus, with four points adrift from position four, UWC will surely be looking to grind out another win when they clash with UKZN. The match kicks off at 16:00 and will be broadcast on SS10.
