After the first round of Varsity Football 2022 produced the goods, with several early upsets on the cards, we selected the top four performers from match day 1.
Precious Mohlae (TUT):
Precious Mohale was a thorn in the midfield of the University of Johannesburg as their title defence got off to a surprise defeat.
A high-octane performance for the Tshwane University of Technology man, who pulled the strings in midfield too with great composure and a short passing game not usually synonymous with the TUT style of play.
Found dangerous areas of space to exploit the UJ midfield and defence and bagged the assists for the second goal of the game.
Duncan Mohale (UFS):
While Sello Diphoko arrives as the key man for Kosvies and the star who they will look to for goals Duncan Mohale’s high press was something that played crucial in their convincing win over UP-Tuks in their opener.
Another talented product of the UFS, his energy unsettled the TUKS defence into several mistakes which last season’s finalists managed to capitalise on.
He also netted the second goal of the game from a corner which came straight from the training ground, a big prospect.
One to look out for this season as they romped to a 3-0 win over their more illustrious opposition.
Omphile Shuping (NWU):
Tshepiso Mahlangu may have won Man of the Match but Shuping is one to look out for in this tournament.
The left-footed winger who’s been handed the ‘Di Maria’ nickname is a constant menace on the flank with his direct running, skill and turn of pace.
With his technical ability to pin-point crosses and set-pieces he is likely to be a focal point for NWU this season as he was during the win over Wits FC as they opened the tournament with a 2-1 victory in the 2022 Edition of Varsity Football.
Manuel Makae (VUT)
You can’t look further than Makae after his brace in the 3-1 victory put him at the summit of the scoring charts after match day 1.
He always seemed to have more time and space than others and made a few dangerous runs that unsettled Delron Buckley’s side.
The VUT striker looks to be their new main man in attack and don’t be surprised if he continues his scoring form when they face TUT on Thursday.
