With their dramatic victory over semi-finals hosts UWC, NWU have fulfilled a long-held dream of reaching a Varsity Football final and secured a bonus too.
The North-West University (NWU) will be hosting both the men’s and women’s Varsity Football finals on Thursday, 26 September 2019 at their home ground in Mafikeng. This after TUT relinquished hosting rights at the start of the season.
The Noble Boys’ road to the final hasn’t been as a smooth as they would have wanted, with their round-robin record reading three wins, two draws and two losses.
However, having dramatically lost to UWC in Round 7, they then returned the favour and will get the chance of doing to same to TUT who were the other team to beat this campaign – 2-1 during the Round 3 double header in Pretoria. ending with a win against the University of the Western Cape (UWC) in the semi-finals.
NWU football manager Vuyolwethu Sambo says they are ready to host a successful Varsity Football final.
“It’s a good move that the Varsity Football team has decided to host the final in Mafikeng. The NWU has a huge football supporter following who are very passionate about the game,” Sambo tells varsitysportssa.com as they begin preparation for what will be the event of the year in small North-West town.
At the start of the season, ‘freshman’ head coach Karabo Masehela was showed belief in his charges stating, “I’m confident that my boys are in this year’s tournament to compete”.
So it has proven and, now, all that it is left is for the Noble Boys to cross the final hurdle and do what has not been done before.
“It is no longer just about participating, but about earning our rightful place as an institute of soccer amongst institutions of higher education.”
NWU will host TUT in the final on Thursday, 26 September at NWU–Mafikeng Stadium and kick-off is scheduled for 18:00.
