The 10 amazing reasons why you should be at Varsity Cricket next week (as if you didn’t already know)
#GooiSomeGees with Varsity Cricket in 2018 as the most fiery cricket tournament returns to its home in Potchefstroom, from the 29th of January to the 3rd of February. Out of the 18 trillion reasons you should be at Varsity Cricket, here are just 10.
Uhm, what a bargain?!
Looking to save your cents for the start of the university celebrations? Varsity Cricket is R20 if you buy tickets on our website, R10 to buy at the gate and free if you have the Varsity Sports app on your phone. Altogether that’s pretty worth it. That’s like less than a beer, especially because what you’re getting is priceless. Also there is usually free beer up for grabs anyway.

South African cricket’s greatest nursery
Don’t think the Varsity Cricket creates any stars? Well, maybe you’ve heard of LUNGI NGIDI and AIDYN MARKRAM! Two cricket geniuses and future Earth representatives to the Intergalactic Cricket Championships (yeah, they are that good)! In 2015, both players represented Tuks as they won the Varsity Cricket tournament under Markram’s captaincy. They went on to win the Campus Cricket World Finals later that year in India. The two recently made their Proteas debuts with Ngidi sending India packing after taking six wickets and Markram being tipped as a future Proteas captain. So, Varsity Cricket is a good place to check the stars before they hit the big time.
Crazy rules (like Jim Carrey crazy)
Varsity Cricket isn’t shy to remind the world of how it’s the dopest cricket tournament in the whole world, and its awesome rules are a few of the reasons why it is. The Power Play Plus Over rewards the batting team with double points for any runs made during an over of their choice. However, the fielding team can use the rule to their advantage as well. If a wicket is lost, the batting side loses five runs. The next batsman in can finish the Power Play Plus Over. The Samsung giant phone targets provide another exciting aspect to Varsity Cricket. Two Samsung targets in the form of giant inflatable phones, are set up at the end of the field, in line with the pitch. If the batsman hits the target, his team is awarded a vital 10 runs.

North-West University are the G.O.A.T!
NWU are the reigning champions this year after they became the first team to defeat Tuks in a final and lift the Varsity Cricket trophy after defeating their Northern rivals by four wickets at Senwes Park. The local side will be motivated by their home ground advantage and the crowd’s gees, to keep the trophy once more. Head on down to support the home side, they’ll be gees if you are!
Flavourfontein!
Don’t let the hecticness of the Potchefstroom sun get you down! Pull into the luscious, relaxing oasis that is Flavourfontein, which will be serving Flying Fish to keep you geesed and hydrated as you watch Varsity Cricket. #flavourfontein might be some of the best seats in the house.

JOOL!
With all the festivities for Potchefstroom’s biggest party, Jool, Varsity Cricket is the ideal place to get your party off to the perfect start. Pull into the Varsity Cricket to catch the best cricket action before heading off to Impala, Texas Saloon or MVG for the holistic Potch’ jol experience.
Party with 5FM!
The 5FM celebrities will be among us mortals at the Varsity Cricket to play some lit tracks, party with the revelers and interview some of the star performers on the day! Probably a good time to check if they have faces for radio or look as good as they sound. 5FM will also be bringing their dunk tank, if you need to be take a chill from the Gauteng-Summer heat.

Free Steers! Yes, we said free.
Feeling hungry after partying? Fancy yourself a giant replica burger builder extraordinaire? Keen on some free Steers vouchers? Steers Build a Burger could be for you. Two teams will be chosen from the crowd and will have to build a burger faster than the other team. Whichever team wins stands the chance of being blessed with free Steers. That’s finger licking good. Oh no wait…
FNB T-shirt scrabble
Who’s ever not keen for a free T-shirt and a bit of scrabble? The FNB T-shirt scrabble, will give members of the crowd a t-shirt at the entrance with a letter imprinted on it. The MC will then call upon the crowd to make a word, which will see some befuddlement, some bumping in to each other and some great Instagram photos.
Samsung Man-vs-Machine
Heard of the terminator? Well think more evil and way cooler. The Samsung Man versus Machine challenge will see Terrans from the crowd take on the first horseman of the robot apocalypse, the bowling machine. Should they hit a six, they’ll be rewarded in the form of beer. If not, they have been conquered. Man falls and machine reigns supreme.
