NWU continued their momentum with a five-wicket win against Maties at the Ibbies Oval on Friday in their penultimate match of the round-robin stage.
The Potchefstroomers restricted Maties to 108 all-out before achieving their target in the power play to end on 111/5. It was Michau du Preez with a quick-fire 26 that finished things off with a big six over long-off.
NWU made the perfect start with Danfred Sefoor (4/16) once again amongst the wickets. He accounted for the wickets of Fritz de Beer, Daniel Da Costa and Louis du Preez in a tremendous opening spell that left Maties in a spot of bother.
Maties’ Ben Stokes lookalike, Ben Ward, played a short-and-sharp innings together with Luke Holland before the latter was needlessly run out leaving Maties on 83/6.
Ward was removed shortly after by the pace and nip of Hlompho Modimokoane (1/13) before the spin of captain Lesego Senokwane (2/15) and Sefoor polished off the tail as Maties were bowled out for 108 in 18 overs.
NWU lost opener Lourén Steenkamp early on for 14 as he fell victim to Ben Ward’s leg spin. Ruan Haasbroek was dismissed shortly afterward for 2 to leave NWU on 66/4 after 10 overs.
Henro Janse van Rensburg hit a couple of fours in his 22 but lost his wicket in the power play. Du Preez entered the fray and quickly hit the remaining runs to seal the win.
