NMMU showed great character to hold off a talented UJ side who they beat 57-52 in their opening Varsity Netball encounter.
It was a tight match throughout with the lead changing hands a number of times, but NMMU did just enough to hold on for a vital victory on home soil.
With the crowd right behind them NMMU took the game to the more fancied UJ and their fighting spirit was eventually rewarded with victory.
UJ were never far behind and pushed extremely hard, but it was not enough and they started their Varsity Netball campaign on a disappointing note.
NMMU’s Mampho Tsotetsi was named FNB Player of the Match for her hard-working display, capping off a fantastic start to the competition for her side.
Kara Willemse – 88% (8 from 9)
NMMU face the well-drilled Maties on Saturday, whilst UJ will be lining up UCT as they look to get off the mark.
