Maties showed why they are the top-ranked side by getting their Varsity Sports Sevens campaign off to a convincing start in Plettenberg Bay on Friday.
In the day’s first match Maties showed that they will be a force to be reckoned with by beating a competitive Kovsies outfit 35-22, and they followed that up by cruising to a 62-0 victory over Limpopo to justify their No.1 seeding.
The NMMU Madibaz were also highly impressive on their way to securing a crushing 82-0 victory over Limpopo.
The Men from Port Elizabeth showed no mercy, and kept the pressure on their rivals from start to finish to get their campaign off to a positive start.
The clash between Tuks and UJ was a far more close-fought affair, with Tuks working hard to shut out a determined UJ side and claim a 10-0 victory.
The first round wrapped up with a showdown between UWC and TUT, and it was the team from the Cape that established the upper hand, eventually running out 35-7 victors.
With the second round in progress there is all to play for as the teams jostle for the early ascendancy at Plettenberg Bay Primary School.
