NWU-Pukke became the first team to beat Maties whilst UP-Tuks ended the third round of Varsity Sevens action in Camps Bay as the only unbeaten team.
The Potchefstroom side squeezed past the defending champion Maties with a late try from skipper Dean Heymans which clinched a dramatic 21-14 victory.
The teams traded tries in a tense first half, but it was Pukke who struck the decisive blow in the final stages as Heymans finished off a well-worked move down the blindside.
Tuks continued their winning ways with a comfortable 26-7 win against Kovsies with Jermained Kleinsmith coming off the bench to grab two tries and swing the match in his team’s favour.
The bonus point victory sees Tuks at the top of the standings as the only team yet to lose a match at the Camps Bay Sports Club.
UJ managed to see off the challenge of NMMU thanks to a brace of tries from Tommy Damba, one of which came in the powerplay, to set up a 31-12 win.
This means that the Madibaz are still looking for their first victory in the competition after tough losses to Pukke and Maties.
The Cape derby between UWC and UCT was an absolute thriller as UWC held on at the end to secure a 28-19 win.
The Bellville side had raced out to an early lead, only for the Ikeys to strike back in the powerplay thanks to a try from Brad Janse van Rensburg.
However, UWC wrapped up the win with a stunning try from Quade Langeveldt who turned on the gas to beat his man on the outside and run in his hat-trick try.
In the final match of the round TUT were simply too strong for Limpopo who are still yet to score their first try in the tournament.
