UWC coach Jeffrey Stevens believes his side will be a force to be reckoned with at the Varsity Sevens tournament at Camps Bay at the end of the month.
Stevens has been working with his squad since the start of October and he is convinced that they will do far more than just make up the numbers when action gets underway on November 29.
Stevens’ side claimed the Shield trophy in the recent Western Province club Sevens league, and after some testing training matches against Maties, UCT and the Blitzbokke he feels they are ready to make an impact at Camps Bay.
“We are very positive, we have worked hard enough and it is just about making sure we take our opportunities when they arise,” he told varsitysportssa.com.
After being put to the test by the national Sevens side UWC scored a morale-boosting victory over defending Varsity Sevens champions Maties which has given Stevens plenty of confidence.
“We are definitely more competitive, we started our preparations earlier this year and the players are at a much higher level with a good blend of youth and experience,” he said.
However, he is aware that training matches cannot equal the pressure they will face at Camps Bay which should be a major step up in intensity.
“We know what to expect but it will be a completely different ballgame when the tournament starts, all the teams will step up and raise their game,” he said.
Stevens certainly has some good talent at his disposal with the 2013 Varsity Shield Player that Rocks Freddie Muller and Zimbabwean international Njabulo Ndlovu two of the bigger names in his squad.
As a Cape University UWC are expecting some good support in Camps Bay, and the Sevens team will also be right behind their formidable Beach Volleyball team that is yet to lose a Varsity Sports match.
“The guys got behind the Beach Volleyball team last year. we are quite close to them so we will be there to support them again when we can this year,” said Stevens.
