The formidable UWC Beach Volleyball team went through both tournaments last year unbeaten and they intend to continue that run at Camps Bay this year.
The duo of Bejancka Della and Prudence Layters swept all before them in Plettenberg Bay and Margate last year, which marks them as the team to beat when action gets underway on November 29.
Della and Layters have been joined by Kayla-Lee Provins this year and the team has been hard at work preparing for their title defence for the last month.
Layters told varsitysportssa.co.za that although they will start as favourites they cannot afford to take anything for granted which is why they have been putting in the hours.
“We are very excited and we have been preparing hard. We train a few times a week at different beaches and in different weather conditions to make sure we are ready when the competition starts.
“We are feeling confident, but every year is different and we are expected much tougher competition this year. Last year nobody knew what to expect but the other teams will be better prepared and more amped this time,” she explained.
Layters said that they are particularly looking forward to playing at Camps Bay where they should get quite a lot of support.
“It is always nice weather there so we are hoping it goes well. We are playing an open tournament there this weekend in preparation.
“We are expecting quite a lot of support, everyone knows that we won last year and they have been telling us that they are going to come down to watch so it should be great,” she said.
