TUT claimed seventh place in the Varsity Netball competition with a 51-35 victory over UCT in Stellenbosch.
The defeat means that the Cape side end without a single win, whilst TUT’s two victories have both been over UCT.
UCT have suffered from slow starts in the inuagural competition, but they started in confident style and established an early lead over TUT.
However, the Pretoria side fought their way back into the game well thanks to some accurate shooting from Eileen van Zyl, and they took a 10-7 lead into the first break.
The Ikeys made a determined start to the second period, with the defensive players snapping up a number of turnovers, although they battled to make the most of all of their opportunities in front of goal.
TUT adjusted well and started exploiting the space on the court to increase their advantage to 24-14 by the half-time break.
UCT were desperate to get back into the game and took their Samsung powerplay early in the third period, but it was TUT that took better advantage of it as they stretched their lead further.
TUT had their tails up and showed plenty of confidence as they started moving the ball around at pace and forcing the UCT defence to work hard.
By the final break TUT’s lead was 35-24, which left UCT with it all to do in order to secure their first win of the competition.
It was not to be as TUT closed the game out well to claim seventh place and leave UCT winless at the end of the inaugural competition.
