TUT notched their first Varsity Netball win when they beat hosts UCT 43-35 in Cape Town on Monday.
After three consecutive heavy defeats on the opening weekend in Pretoria TUT bounced back well, leaving UCT still looking for their first win in the competition.
Despite a determined side by the home side, it was TUT who took the early initiative as sharp-shooter Eileen van Zyl made UCT pay with her accuracy.
The Cape side were giving everything in a physical encounter, but they could not prevent TUT from establishing a 9-5 lead at the end of the first quarter.
UCT were enjoying the support of a vocal home crowd, but they could not keep up with TUT who moved the ball around well to take a 21-13 lead into the half-time break.
The home side took their powerplay in the third quarter, and they made it count to bring themselves right back into the game.
That saw TUT start the final period with a slender 29-28 lead, and it was anybody’s game as both sides hunted their first win of the competition.
However, the home side’s error count started to mount as the players tired, and it was TUT that took advantage as they secured victory.
The defeat leaves UCT at the bottom of the standings and looking for some inspiration ahead of their clash with Kovsies in Bloemfontein next week whilst TUT will travel to Stellenbosch to face Maties
