They are the form team of the competition, they are Varsity Netball’s log leaders. They have been sublime without fault.
It is, thus, no overestimation of their prowess when NWU-Pukke’s coach, Dorette Badenhorst, says that her side will be aiming for nothing less than a full-house of points when they square off against Maties in Potchefstroom tonight.
The NWU-Puk is unbeaten in the inaugural Varsity Netball competition, having won all three their games as well as securing three bonus points.
“Yes, a bonus point is in our sights and another goal is to keep them from getting one. We are definitely ready for Maties tonight.”
Although there are lots of notes on the piano, the NWU-Puk will play the tune that has secured them a standing ovation time and again.
“They have a physical approach to the game, but we know what we must do to beat them. For us, the important thing is to stick to our game plan and not to worry too much about theirs,” explains Badenhorst, whilst also emphasising the importance of not tarnishing their winning record.
“At this stage of the competition every game is of cardinal importance. All the teams are very much on even keel regarding their class and there is very little to separate them. For us, each win and each goal achieved elevates our confidence levels and that will play an increasingly important role as we head towards the semi-finals,” she added.
For Badenhorst, the tag of ‘favourites’ is an uncomfortable fit.
“It is always a lot easier to be the under-dogs,” Badenhorst quips. “It puts some added pressure on us. Still, we have a point to prove and we have the confidence to do so. We are playing some great netball and we will give Maties a proper go.”
A sold out SANDF Kopanelo Hall will aslo be a boon for the home side’s cause.
“That’s going to be interesting. The players won’t be used to such a big crowd and they will have to keep their focus. That said, it’s going to be fantastic playing in front of our home crowd and we will want to make them proud.”
