Two second-half goals from Thabo Mnyamane saw NWU secure a tough 2-1 win over a determined UCT side in Mafikeng.
The bottom-placed visitors took a 1-0 lead over their more-fancied rivals into half-time before Mnyamane saved the home side’s blushes with a brace.
The win sees NWU move into second place on the Varsity Football standings, just one point adrift of pace-setters TUT, whilst UCT remain at the bottom of the log with just one point from their six games.
The Cape side grabbed a surprise early lead with Thami Mehlo taking his opportunity well to silence the Mafikeng crowd.
NWU looked for an immediate response and threw everything into attack but the UCT efence stood up well and they managed to protect their lead to lead 1-0 at the break
The home side came out with real intent in the second half and it was not long before Mnyamane levelled matters after getting a good cross from right wing Luthando Ntokwenzani.
He followed that up soon afterwards with another goal to take his tally for the tournament to seven goals and hand his side the lead much to the relief of the home fans.
UCT searched for an equaliser but it was not to be as NWU held on for their fourth victory of the tournament.
