The NMMU Madibaz have claimed five consecutive man of the match awards in their unbeaten start to Varsity Football.
The Eastern Cape outfit are currently in second place ahead of their showdown with the table-topping TUT on Monday, and they will be gunning for a sixth straight man of the match award in Pretoria.
The players who obtained these awards are, Niven Kops against UWC and NWU, Claudius Sagandira against UCT, Lindsay Stowman against Tuks and Leroy Van Rensburg against Wits.
Van Rensburg, who scored two goals in the 4-1 victory over Wits in Port Elizabeth said that the five awards have given the team plenty of confidence ahead of the knock-out phase of the competition.
“It’s a huge privilege receiving the man of the match reward, considering that NMMU has bagged five consecutive men of the match Awards, showing that as a team we want to be successful in achieving our goal and that is reaching the final.”
However, Van Rensburg knows that the job is not done yet, and made it clear that the team id focused on finishing as strong as possible.
“As an individual it means that all my hard work and efforts on the training pitch are starting to pay off and being man of the match for the first home game for this competition is an achievement I won’t forget and I will be aiming for more in the upcoming matches,” he said.
The NMMU striker said that the team was relieved to reward their home fans in the victory over Wits.
“It was our first home game as a team, that we were a bit nervous because of the high expectations we set in the previous matches.
“We don’t want to disappoint our home crowd and university so we went out on the pitch and played our hearts out for the NMMU badge and the supporters which were absolutely amazing, were encouragement to the team who would like to see more supporters at the last home game against UFS,” he added.
