NMMU captain Kurt Duff believes that the home crowd in Port Elizabeth played a major role in his team’s comfortable 4-1 victory over Wits.
The Eastern Cape outfit scored two goals in each half of what was their first Varsity Football home game to keep their unbeaten run going.
The victory sees the Madibaz stay in second place on the standings after five rounds of action, just two log points adrift of pace-setters TUT who they face in a table-topping clash next week.
After the victory over Wits Duff was full of praise for the home crowd, who braved the chilly conditions to support their team.
“Thank you to everybody that came to support regardless of the very cold weather, you created a great motivating atmosphere.
“An extended big thank you to everyone who was involved in the organizing of the game and the sponsors that have made this Varsity Football competition possible.
“From the game firstly, right through to the post-match function, excellence with NMMU came out tops,” he said.
Duff said that although his team had cruised to a convincing victory, they feel that there is still room for improvement as they look to be more ruthless on attack.
“The feeling within the team is that we are satisfied with the win but we know that we have higher standards than that and we want to improve our performance, that being so, the result is most important as well, so were happy.
“We wanted to score more goals, as we had chances to do so, however, we did all that we could for our home welcoming, it was indeed about quality rather than quantity of goals,” he explained.
The Madibaz will be back on home soil on September 2 when they take on UFS in the last match before the knock-out phase, but before that there is the small matter of their showdown with TUT in Tshwane on Monday.
