Orlando Pirates administrative manager Floyd Mbele has hailed the formation of Varsity Football which has taken the country by storm.
Varsity Football is still less than two months old but the football fraternity in the country is already raving about the success of the tournament.
Mbele is one of the products of University sport, having guided the USSA Football National Team that played in the World Student Games in Turkey in 2005. He cut his teeth in the professional ranks, serving as Chairman at Platinum Stars now steers the Sea Robbers ship in Parktown.
“This is long overdue. This should have been done a long time ago,”said Mbele.
“This will go long way to unearth lot of talent to the level of both First Division and Premier league”, he added.
University football has produced a number of PSL players, including University of Pretoria captain Tebogo Monyai, former Bloemfontein Celtic striker Collins Chabalala, former Amazulu striker Theo Shiluvane and Mbabane Swallows striker Mfanafuthi Bhembe.
‘Jomo’ as Mbele is affectionately known in football circles recalls his heydays whilst still involved with SASSU, now known as USSA.
“Some of us we are products of University football. We have had number of PSL players like Patrick Malokase and Sbusiso Mnisi coming from the ranks of University football. We hope to see lot of players from this tournament joining the PSL teams,” he said.
