Sitting in bottom place on the Varsity Football standings with just one point on the log UCT have nothing left to lose.
Monday night’s clash with Tuks away from home was a difficult game for the boys from Cape Town. The encounter saw Tuks win convincingly 5-0.
UCT went to Pretoria hoping to be able to challenge the current national champions who they played against at last year’s USSA Championships. They were, however, not able to challenge Tuks the way to wanted to.
Miro Koehler, UCT midfielder and an honours student in international relations said that Tuks’ early goal caught them off guard as did their powerful throw-ins.
“We were expecting them to challenge us more on the field. If we’d scored on one of our chances we would have been able to prolong the phases in which we actually took the game to their half,” said the German player. He said that all 5 goals came down to individual and tactical mistakes.
Right winger Thami Mehlo believes UCT gave Tuks too much respect and therefore too much valuable time on the ball which made it difficult for UCT to impose their style of play.
“We had a few decent patches of play,” he said. Unfortunately UCT were unable to capitalise.
On Monday UCT will take on a strong TUT team in Tshwane. The match will see the top of the log play against the bottom of the log.
Left back Jonathan Melamdowitz believes that UCT have to take each game as it comes. When asked how he thinks UCT will fair against TUT seeing that they beat Tuks 4-1 he said: “The fact that TUT hammered Tuks means very little in football. On Monday UFS, with whom we drew 1-1 in Round One, managed a draw with TUT. Football is a game where anyone can come away with a result and we will do all we can next Monday to get the points.”
Next week’s game against TUT will be aired live on Supersport at 16:30.
