UWC scored a goal in each half to record a 2-0 victory over Wits in their Varsity Football clash in Johannesburg.
The result sees the Cape outfit move past Wits on the Varsity Football standings after notching the first win of their campaign.
The visitors took control of the match early on as striker Curtley Beukes rose highest to meet a good cross and his header beat Wits goalkeeper Minki Mtshali to make it 1-0.
Both teams battled to build any real momentum as possession changed hands often, and Wits were to have the next opportunity as Tebogo Digoamaje forced a save from UWC goalkeeper Basikelele Mdletye from an indirect free kick.
Mdletye had more work to do as Wits looked desperately for an equaliser, but he was equal to the task as the home side struggled to find the back of the net.
Neo Makua of Wits and UWC’s Robin van Rensburg were both shown yellow cards towards the end of the first half as a result of some dangerous tackling as UWC went into half-time with a 1-0 advantage.
They doubled that lead soon after the break when Robbin Swartz spotted Mtshali off his line and chipped it over the Wits stopper to score a remarkable goal from his own half.
At 2-0 down Wits had no option but to throw everything into attack, but despite dominating possession they could not find the crucial finishing touch.
The home side ended the match camped in UWC’s half as they pressed for a goal, but despite hitting the bar twice and actually getting the ball in the back of the net they came away with nothing to show for their efforts thanks to an offside call.
The result sees UWC move up to fifth place in the standings, whilst Wits are faced with a mountain to climb down in seventh position.
