It’s that time of the year again, where we call upon you, the Varsity Football supporters to vote for your FNB Player of the Tournament.
After the round-robin stage of the tournament finished, all coaches were asked to submit their three favourite players from this year’s tournament, excluding players from their own team.
The coaches ranked their nominees from first to third place, with first position worth three points, second position two points and third position one point.
After collating those points, the three final nominees were confirmed and it is now on you, the public, to vote for your favourite Player of the Tournament through social media platforms until 22 September.
The player with the most votes will then be named the official 2022 Varsity Football Player of the Tournament and will be announced at the Varsity Football finals on 22 September.
The nominees:
Thulani Zandamela (UJ)
Thulani Zandamela was picked up by Mamelodi Sundowns after his debut tournament last season and was unlucky not to be amongst the nominees for this award in 2021. It appears he took that as motivation and came back with a renewed sense of purpose. Unplayable at times, skilful, effective and on top of that he knows where the back of the net is. He’s likely to make a move to the a PSL club, having left Sundowns before the tournament. Zandamela has a massive future ahead of him and the UJ playmaker could help the Orange Army to scoop back-to-back titles when they face TUT in the final next week.

Sello Diphoko (UFS)
Sello Diphoko scooped the Player of the Tournament last season despite being on the losing side in the final. Having departed for a dream move to the USA and still making the list before the semi-finals is a real testament to the quality he displayed. He epitomises Iyachesa and the term changing lives of Varsity Football and his absence was clearly felt when Kovsies lost to Tshwane University of Technology for a place in the final. A creative spark, a goal scorer with the magical left foot, Diphoko is destined to reach professional football. His three goals this campaign just further enhanced his reputation as one of the most explosive talents to grace the tournament.

Ntokozo Mgidi (VUT)
Ntokozo Mgidi is 24 and hails from Duduza, the same place as Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Bongani Zungu. Number 10 – he was one of the outstanding players of the tournament – scoring vital goals and assisting his teammates. On top, he was the real live-wire that drove VUT all tournament, even when they had their backs against the wall he was able to produce moments of magic out of nothing. A dribbling wizard with a quick turn of pace, that packs a powerful shot from range and a rare dead ball specialist in the tournament.

Voting close at noon on 22 September. Terms and conditions.
The 2022 Varsity Football final between UJ and TUT will kick off at 18:00 on Thursday, 22 September and be broadcast live on SuperSport Variety 4 (DStv channel 209).
