The previous winners of the men’s and women’s Varsity Football tournaments feature on a giant banner at Tuks Stadium during the 2021 edition.
Here’s how the women’s titles were won …
2013 – UJ
After years of struggling to get exposure and sponsors, this competition gave South African women’s football a big boost.
UJ had the honour of being the first team to clinch the Varsity Football title after thrashing TUT 6-0 in the final at Tuks Stadium.
UJ had beaten Tuks 2-0 in the semi-finals, with TUT hammering UL 4-0.
2014 – TUT
Having been humiliated the previous year, TUT redeemed themselves by winning the second edition of Varsity Women’s Football.
They produced a five-star performance in the cup final, giving Tuks a 5-0 hiding.
This tournament introduced one of the best players to come out of South African football, Thembi Kgatlana. The UWC star was named FNB Player of the Tournament and went on to win the 2018 Caf Women’s Player of the Year award.
TUT’s Marry Ntsweng grabbed the Golden Boot with three goals.
2015 – TUT
TUT reigned supreme again, but had to sweat for their 2-1 win against UWC in the cup final at UWC Stadium.
In notable group-stage results, Tuks thumped UJ 3-0 and VUT thrashed NWU by the same scoreline.
UWC star Amogelang Motau was named the FNB Player of the Tournament.
2016 – TUT
TUT claimed a hat-trick of titles by beating UWC 1-0 in the cup final at TUT Stadium, while the men also won their competition to make it a memorable double for the university.
The TUT women dominated the individual awards. Lebogang Rakhuduwe was named FNB Player of the Tournament, Letabo Modiba’s five goals secured her the Golden Boot, while Thabile Malambe received the Golden Glove.
2017 – TUT
TUT lifted the trophy for a fourth consecutive time after a commanding 4-0 victory against UJ in the cup final at TUT Stadium.
In the semi-finals, UWC held TUT to 1-1 in regulation time before losing 4-3 on penalties, and UJ thumped UCT 4-0.
TUT’s Katlego Khwinana won the FNB Player of the Tournament award.
2018 – TUT
TUT extended their record-breaking run in the women’s competition with yet another title, defeating familiar foes UWC 2-1 at the Bidvest Stadium in Milpark.
UWC had closed the gap between themselves and TUT but just lacked that cutting edge needed to beat them.
UWC star Bongeka Gamede won the FNB Player of the Tournament award, while TUT’s Mpho Monangwe was named the Debonairs Real Deal Saver of the Tournament and UJ’s Amanda Mthandi’s the Samsung Striker of the Tournament.
2019 – TUT
TUT made it six Varsity Women’s Football titles in a row by breaking brave UWC’s hearts in Mafikeng. The champions won 4-1 on penalties after the cup final had ended 1-1 in regulation time.
It was the first final to be decided on penalties and UWC bowed out of the competition with their heads held high.
UWC’s Janice Smith won the Golden Boot award after scoring seven goals in the tournament, while TUT’s Loretta Mokoena received the Golden Glove.
